Will I Need To Have Teeth Extracted For Braces?

The notion of having teeth pulled is a common question we hear at Serrano Orthodontics, and we get it – the idea of having teeth extracted can sound pretty daunting.

First things first: not everyone needs teeth extracted before getting braces. In fact, many of our patients sail through their orthodontic treatment without losing a single tooth. But sometimes, removing a tooth or two can be the secret ingredient to achieving that perfect smile. Dr. Andrew Serrano and Dr. Paul Serrano are eager to explore why that might be the case.

Why Would Anyone Need Teeth Pulled for Braces?

There are several reasons why we might consider extractions as part of your orthodontic treatment. If your mouth is feeling a bit crowded, removing a couple of teeth might give the others room to line up properly. Sometimes, your front teeth might be sticking out more than you’d like. In these cases, extracting some back teeth can help us guide them back into line.

Bite issues are another common reason for extractions. Pulling a tooth or two can help us fix problems like overbites or underbites. In some cases, you might have a tooth that’s stuck under the gum (we call this “impacted”), and sometimes it’s best to remove it. Lastly, if your smile isn’t quite centered, extractions can sometimes help us get everything lined up just right.

At Serrano Orthodontics, we consider each smile a unique work of art. Dr. Paul Serrano and Dr. Andrew Serrano use all sorts of cool tech (like 3D imaging) to devise the best treatment plan for your smile.

The Upsides of Extraction

Now, we know “tooth extraction” doesn’t sound like a party. But sometimes, it can be the VIP pass to a stellar smile. More space often means straighter teeth that are less likely to shift after treatment. Sometimes, extractions can even improve your overall facial structure.

In some cases, extractions can speed up your treatment, getting you to your new smile faster. And here’s a bonus: straight teeth are like a dream for your toothbrush and floss, making it easier to keep your mouth clean and healthy.

But What About the Downsides?

We believe in giving you the full picture, so let’s talk about some things to consider. Once a tooth is gone, it’s gone for good. We work hard to close extraction spaces, but sometimes small gaps can remain. Removing teeth can occasionally affect how your lips and cheeks look, and while extractions can speed things up in some cases, they might extend treatment time in others.

It’s okay to feel nervous about the idea of extractions. We understand, and we’re here to answer all your questions and address any concerns you might have.

How Do We Decide If You Need Extractions?

At Serrano Orthodontics, we don’t make these decisions lightly. We put on our detective hats and do a thorough investigation. We take a close look at your teeth, jaw, and face and use x-rays and 3D imaging to see what’s happening beneath the surface. We check out how your upper and lower teeth fit together, and for our younger patients, we consider how much more growing you might do.

We even use fancy computer programs to show you what your smile might look like with different treatment options. But most importantly, we talk to you! We want to hear your thoughts and concerns. Remember, what works for your best friend might not be right for you. Every smile is unique, and we treat it that way.

Are There Other Options Besides Pulling Teeth?

You bet! We’ve got a few tricks up our sleeves. Sometimes we can make more room by widening your palate. In other cases, we might create a bit of extra space by carefully reducing the size of certain teeth (don’t worry, we’re talking about tiny amounts here). We can sometimes create space by shifting your back teeth, and for our younger individuals seeking treatment, we can occasionally use special devices to guide jaw growth.

What If I Do Need Teeth Pulled?

If we decide together that extractions are the way to go, here’s what you can expect. We’ll send you to a trusted dentist or oral surgeon for the actual extraction. They’ll make sure you’re comfortable and pain-free during the procedure. Most people feel back to normal in a day or two. We’ll give you all the info you need to take care of your mouth after the extraction. Once you’re healed up, we’ll get started on your braces journey!
